Rolls-Royce with electric drive

Posted on 7th March 2011 in Cars, Technology

There are developments that could have been long considered impossible: sports car with a diesel engine for example or an S-Class with four cylinders. In the same direction is also the 102EX – a Rolls-Royce with electric drive. For the first time shown as the Experimental Electric Phantom (Phantom EE) called luxury car at the Geneva Motor Show.

394 hp maximum power
As a basis for the electric Rolls-Royce is a phantom. Its traditional V-12 gasoline engine with 6.7 liter displacement and 460 hp will be replaced by two electric motors and lithium-ion batteries. The motors are connected to an input transmission with an integrated differential. Each unit has an output of 145 kW (197 hp equivalent), which the Phantom EE has a maximum power of 290 kW (394 hp) and a maximum torque of 800 Newton meters. According to the manufacturer of the Phantom EE is far up to 200 kilometers. For the sprint from zero to 100 Rolls-Royce is a value of less than eight seconds, top speed is electronically limited at 160 mph.

Large battery pack
The battery pack with a capacity of 71 kilowatt hours, according to Rolls-Royce is the largest that has ever been used in a car street legal. The energy store contains so-called NCM cells (lithium-nickel-cobalt-manganese oxide), a variation of the lithium-ion cells, which is particularly energetic and has a high power density. To charge serves a five-pin socket that replaces the normal mechanism of the phantom tank. The standard tank valve was replaced with a transparent. Three-color LEDs indicate the charge state of the vehicle in red or green. Three separate charging units are connected to the battery, which allow a single-phase load (20 hours) and a three-phase charge (eight hours). A fourth induction charger allows wireless store – a new technique that is being tested with the phantom EE.

Experimental car, not a concept vehicle
Rolls-Royce stressed that it is the Phantom EE by a so-called experimental car. In contrast to this concept cars are always fully functional and roadworthy automobiles, which are used in “real” materials like wood, leather and metal instead of clay or foam. To see all the experimental cars of the brand, among them a red double-R emblem. The Makrolon instead of stainless steel produced mascot “Spirit of Ecstasy” is immersed in the phantom EE in blue LED light.

New paint and even more noble leather
In addition to the zero-emission driving is the Phantom EE also experimented with new materials. For example, a new coating of nanoparticles will use. This is applied in 16 layers of what the color should still give it more visual depth. The first time is a leather used is tanned with chestnut oil, thereby showing yet more natural than the commonly used structure.

Not planned as a series model
A series production of the Phantom EE or 102EX is not planned. Rather, the cars, both general alternative drive concepts and new materials are tested. Immediately after the Geneva Motor Show is the single piece to go on a world tour. In this case, the company wants to collect as many opinions from customers, media representatives and the wider public. It is also about the question of whether a fully electric drive can still give the customer an authentic Rolls-Royce experience.

Spending Less on Fuel

Posted on 1st February 2011 in Cars

With the cost of gas going up you’ll want to make sure that every cent you spend on gas is worth it. Here are a few tips.

- Remove any extra weight or unnecessary items that might be weighing your vehicle down. This will make it easier on both your automobile and your gas.

- Use cruise control when you’re on the highway. This keeps you from unnecessarily having to speed up and slow down, which burns gas.

- Turn off your engine when idling at the drive-thru lane at fast food restaurants or the bank or when you’re waiting for a train to pass.

- Keep your car tuned up so that you can get the best gas mileage.

- Avoid quickly speeding up or slowing down between stop signs. Doing this burns through your gas.

- Make sure that you change your air filter every 15,000 miles.

- You can also opt to take public transportation. Not only will this save you gas and money, it’s better for the environment.

Extreme Benefits of Diesel Cars: Three Reasons You Need to Buy One

Posted on 1st February 2011 in Cars

Today’s economy demands the consumer to be on the look out for savings. The benefits of diesel cars are extreme and those concerned with saving money should consider buying one. The following are just three of the reasons to consider this purchase:

The biggest difference you will see when buying a diesel car is in how much fuel is used. A diesel engine is approximately 30% more efficient than a vehicle using gasoline. With better fuel efficiency, you can keep more of your money when visiting the fill up station.

You will also find that an engine operating on diesel does not run as hot as gas powered vehicles. What this means is a higher life expectancy on the engine, resulting in less engine repairs.

While diesel engines may have been known as heavy pollutants in the past, advanced technology resulted in less emitted toxins and a much quieter engine.
